Obituary of Dorothy Garvin Montgomery

Dorothy “Fitzy” Garvin Montgomery, age 95, wife of the late James R. Montgomery, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 21, 2016, under the wonderful care of all the staff at Brookdale Buckingham in Glastonbury and Vitas Healthcare. Fitzy was born on September 25, 1920 in Hartford, CT, the very proud daughter of Harold P. and Dorothy W. Garvin, growing up in West Hartford with summers spent in Old Lyme at the family’s resort, Hawk’s Nest Beach. Fitzy graduated from Hall High School, where she was honored by her class for excellence in athletics, and graduated from Stoneleigh Junior College. After college, she worked as a dental assistant in Florida where she met her lifelong partner and husband, James R. Montgomery. They lived in Simsbury and later moved to Glastonbury while happily spending every summer at the beach. Retirement was spent doing what they loved most - RV’ing to Florida in the winters and back to Hawks’ Nest Beach in the summers. She was predeceased by her son James Montgomery, and survived by her three daughters (and their spouses) Deborah Mazer, Susan Gilbert, and Dorothy Hughes and her daughter-in-law Rosemary Montgomery. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and countless friends whom she considered family. Fitzy lived life to the fullest and was devoted to her family and friends, her favorite charities, gardening, traveling, and the arts. The center of any good party, she loved practical jokes and knew how to light up a room with her quick wit. She truly enjoyed her life at the beach while listening to Dixieland jazz or Lake Wobegon, playing Solitaire and sneaking a bite of ice cream. She will be remembered as a person who strived to make the world a happier place. There will be a private burial held on Friday, June 24th. Friends are invited to visit with her family at Fitzy’s cottage E-7 at Hawk’s Nest Beach (13 Sidewalk Lane, Old Lyme) Saturday June 25, 2016 from 11am to 5pm.
