Obituary of Barbara A. Turgeon

Barbara Ann (Smith) Turgeon, 87, of Glastonbury, passed away February 12, 2025.  “Barb”, “Bobbi”, or “Irish”, she was predeceased by her husband Dan (2020) and leaves behind her five children, Nancy Anderson and her husband Mark of Lebanon, Karen Goulet of Newington, Patricia Radocchia of Lebanon, Janine Turgeon of Marlborough, and Daniel Turgeon and his wife Rebecca of Glastonbury.

She also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Jessica Gieras, Jamie Goulet, Eric Anderson, Samantha, Michael, and Andrew Radocchia, Sara Rutkowski, and Kathleen and Benjamin Turgeon, along with 24 nieces/nephews and five great grandchildren.  Barbara is survived by four siblings, Richard Smith, Sandra Charland, Linda Guerrette, and Robert Smith, and was predeceased by her brother David.

Barbara was born in Providence on September 12, 1937, to Francis and Mary Smith.  Her family lived in Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Ohio, before settling in Newington CT where she met Dan, her husband for 63 years.  Barbara was in banking for many years and worked at American Savings Banks in Newington, Wethersfield, West Hartford, Glastonbury, and New Britain.  She was a Branch Manager and later became a Sr. Loan Originator in the main office in New Britain before retiring in 1990 to care for her grandchildren.

Throughout her life, Barbara had a wide variety of hobbies and interests.  In her retirement years she enjoyed gardening, dancing, knitting, reading, playing games, doing word puzzles, traveling, and feeding the birds.  She took great pride in her beautiful gardens and was always outside working in the garden and her bird sanctuary. During her breaks she enjoyed daily lunches and events at the Glastonbury Senior Center with her husband Dan.

Barbara also loved to collect dolls and toys from her childhood, and in retirement she also ran a used book business to keep busy.   She loved to frequent tag sales, flea markets and antique shows to add unique items to her collections.  She also served as a docent for both the Newington and Glastonbury Historical Societies, often displaying some of her vintage dolls in local historical homes and sharing their history.

Although we will miss her greatly, we are grateful for the time we had and for the cherished memories.  We are comforted knowing she will be with her husband Dan again and the many others who passed before her.

Special thanks to her home aide Althea, the nurses from Hartford Hospice, and the numerous aides who supported Barbara over the final months of her life.
