John McCormick

Obituary of John P. McCormick

John Patrick McCormick, 96, passed away peacefully Feb. 20 at home in Glastonbury, CT, in the presence of loving family.

Raised in Milton, MA, he was married for 61 years to Mary Ann (Hanlon) McCormick, who died in 2018.

As a teenager, John enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1946 and served in China and Japan before going on to get an engineering degree from Boston University.

He worked as an aerospace engineer at McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis, MO, and spent most of his career at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, CT, where he developed lifelong friendships.

A born storyteller, John had a wry sense of humor that persisted until his final days.

At times his humor incorporated his engineering draftsman skills, as when he created a mock Florida election ballot in 2000. Minus the hanging chads, it included a dotted circuitous line that led voters to late Kansas Gov. Alf Landon.

John was also known to take his five daughters on trips to Revolutionary War reenactments and to the beach, cultivating in them a love of history and the seaside.

He cared tenderly for his wife when she developed Alzheimer’s while keeping up with his several books a week habit and regular, hilarious, phone calls with his younger brother Dave.

John is survived by his daughters, Cynthia McCormick Hibbert, and her husband Brian Whicher, of E. Sandwich, MA; Karen Porcaro and her husband Steve of Derry, NH; Lisa McCormick of Glastonbury; Terri-Lynn McCormick of Boston, MA: and Susan McCormick of Clemmons, NC.

In addition, he is survived by his brother David McCormick of Hudson, NH; sister-in-law Frances McCormick of Essex, NH; grandchildren Siobhan Prescott and her husband Michael; Cameron, Brittany, Haley and Katie Porcaro; Caroline and Patrick Hibbert; Aran Szostak and Eamon McCormick as well as many nephews and nieces. John was predeceased by his brother Harry McCormick and son-in-law Charles H. Hibbert Jr.
