Obituary of James A. Shumway

Jim Shumway died on July 23, 2025, after a long battle with cancer.

James Alan Shumway was born in Dayton, Ohio, on December 10, 1954, to Robert C. and Harriet (Melcher) Shumway. He lived in Oil City and New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, before moving with his family to Watertown, Connecticut, when he was 11. He graduated from Watertown High School before earning a B.A. and M.A. at the University of Connecticut. He worked for the State of Connecticut, Anderson Consulting, and Heublein before returning to the State as an IT Director in the Comptroller’s Office. He retired in 2010. Jim was an excellent and passionate golfer, a committed fan and supporter of UCONN Men’s basketball, and a 45 season devoted player and Assistant Manager of his softball team, the Fighting Plankton.  He was universally perceived as the best pure hitter on the team.  He was well loved and respected by all teammates.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon (Clifford) Shumway, twin daughters Danielle and Nicole of Glastonbury, his brother, David (Heather Arnet) of Huntington, NY, sister Barbara (Edwin) Altamirano of Watertown, CT, several nieces and a nephew.  He is also survived by dear friends Mike Pinevich, Bill and Sylvia Green, his longtime carpool friends and softball team.
