Mr. Doll was my favorite teacher in a high school full of "the best teachers". I'm not sure how Glastonbury managed to cull that much talent together, but man did the students luck out. Mr. Doll was so engaging that you couldn't help but learn. That kind of connection with students takes intellect, charisma and personality...and he had all three in spades. I won't say he was the singular reason I am the person I am today. But, he might have been the keystone for a department that is probably is the greatest reason I am the person I am today. And for that I shall always be thankful.
The last time I saw Mr. Doll was a random afternoon maybe 10 years ago. I was home visiting and happened to be driving out of town down Hebron Avenue. I saw his house, made a u-turn and I decided to "pop in" (don't shame me; we used to do that before cell phones). Of course he remembered and welcomed me. I hadn't seen him in 20 years, so I told him what had become of me (lawyer). He was not at all surprised, but gracious when I told him his mentorship and friendship was the reason.
Man, did it hurt to hear he had passed. But, it also gave me (and many that I know) a chance to remember fondly our favorite teacher. Thank you, Mr. Doll and rest in peace. I'm certain your family knows exactly how wonderful you are and I hope this serves as a reminder that the rest of us feel the same.

Dan was my Trinity roommate and life long friend. Brenda and I had many adventures with Dan and Dot: scuba diving, trip to Egypt and many others. They used to come to our Yom Kippur break-fast. They liked the Jewish food. Brenda and I miss them dearly.

Mr. Doll was an excellent teacher, he was my favorite teacher. But he was SO much more than that. He was my safe place. I went through some things that a teenager shouldn’t have to deal with, things that would be very difficult for anyone, at any age, to go through. Dan, as he insisted I call him outside of the walls of GHS, was my place to cry (something that Sicilian men, even teenagers, weren’t supposed to do) and let out all of the anguish that I was feeling, often at his home. He was my safe place but he was also my most trusted advisor. He taught me skills that I still use to this day. He taught me how to be a real man. I cannot emphasize enough how critical he was to my development in high school. By the time I graduated he was a true friend who I could count on to tell me what I needed to hear rather than what I wanted to hear. He was one of the wisest persons I have ever known. He was also one hell of a racket ball player. I’m crying as I type this because of the tremendous gratitude I have for the impact he had on my life.
I want to thank the family for lending Dan to his students, I’m sure there were times where he sacrificed time with you to be the incredible teacher and person that he was. I also want to express my deepest condolences. I know from experience that there’s nothing that I can say that will alleviate your grief so I won’t try. All I will say is that he had a tremendous impact on so many lives, so there are thousands of us that are sending our prayers and positive thoughts to you.

Mr Doll was my favorite teacher. He made a difficult transition a lot easier. (I had to switch high schools in my senior year.) He gave me the nickname Sly after Sylvester Stallone. LOL Some former classmates still call me that. :) He was a GREAT teacher who touched the lives of so many students and made their lives better. I have thought of him fondly over the years. My condolences to his family.

My grandpa loved teaching, traveling and scuba diving. Him and his wife had a beautiful relationship that I always looked up to, they had so many adventures together. My grandpa loved teaching so much that he came to my school a couple times to teach. I’m not going to lie, I was a little embarrassed when he showed my classmates my baby photos but I always felt very proud to show off my super cool grandpa. He was an extremely fun out going guy. For my highschool graduation my grandpa took me to Best Buy to buy me a new laptop. He wanted to make sure I had the best computer that would last me all throughout college. After we found the perfect laptop it was time to find the perfect laptop case! My grandpa asked an employee to find him the most indestructible case they had. The employee was happy to help and told us all about this case that could be run over by a car and your computer would still be perfectly safe! So my grandpa took a good look at the case. He’s looking at the case and all of a sudden throws it down on the ground and starts jumping on it. He then stops and says “yeah this seems pretty good we’ll take it!” The employee says “great let me ring this up for you!” While picking up the case off the ground. My grandpa goes “no I don’t want that one a crazy old man jumped on it!”. I’ll never forget how funny that was, and this is just one example of funny memory Dan has left me with. :)

I had Mr. Doll for Ancient History, in my freshman year at GHS. He drew battle plans of famous battles, and told the story of how the messenger ran all the way from the plains of Marathon to bring the news of the Greek victory over the Persians, and, after exclaiming "We conquer," he died. He also drew diagrams of the Macedonian Phalanx and the Roman Phalanx, and told of how effective the Romans were at hand-to-hand combat, with their short swords. He made it live!
I also remember that he wrote the script and did the scenery for the History Department's one-act play, called the "Bod Squad." After the play, I took home one of his magic marker on cardboard drawings of a urinal (there was a scene in the men's room) and hung it on my bedroom wall.
He was one of a kind. I owe him a great debt of gratitude.

Mr. Doll was my all-time favorite teacher. He shot a rubber band at my head once. I have no idea why. I loved that he wore clogs. So sorry, Amy. x

He was exceptional. The only teacher who could be funny, educational, and have swagger at the same time. We were all so very lucky to have him guide us for a bit. My heart goes out to the family with deepest condolences.

Mr. Doll was one of my favorite history teachers. His enthusiasm was contagious, and I am grateful for him introducing me to Greek and Roman history. I thought of him when I went to Athens almost 35 years after taking that class. My favorite memory was talking to him at the beginning of the Blizzard of ‘78. He didn’t think it was going to amount to much and we wouldn’t miss any school. My condolences to his family.

Mr. Doll was a wonderful teacher. I was very shy and often scared to be at school. Mr. Doll made me feel comfortable in the classroom, and he clearly enjoyed his subject! My condolences to his family. PS. I ended up majoring in History at Trinity College too.

I experienced Mr. Doll’s teaching at Glastonbury High in the 70s. He had a gift. His warmth and friendliness were present in every word he said. He loved us. I honor this great man. And the man could play softball!
