Obituary of Gerrie V. Bishop
Gerrie Vandercook Bishop passed away peacefully at home on December 30, 2025. She was the beloved wife of the love of her life and dance partner, the late Gail Thomas Bishop.
Gerrie was born in 1938 to Margaret Johnston Vandercook in New Haven, CT.
Her father, Willard Vandercook, died in a boating accident before she was born. Gerrie grew up in Niantic and attended The Williams Memorial Institute for Girls (renamed The Williams School). She married and moved to Glastonbury where she lived and thrived, preparing home cooked meals and baking pies and desserts. She was passionate about her family and many treasured, lifelong friends. She continued to make new friends wherever she went. She will be forever remembered for her terrific sense of humor and her contagious laughter.
She graduated from Central Connecticut State University. She was employed for several years by the Research Department of the former Child & Family Services of CT. She was then employed as a Programmer/Analyst by Aetna Life and Casualty and later retired from the former Dunne, Kimmel & Fein, LLC.
Upon retirement, she and Gail became active members of the Glastonbury Senior Center, playing bridge, enjoying events, and going on bus trips. Gerrie was the Membership Coordinator for the Glastonbury Chapter of AARP for many years and was a member of the Glastonbury Commission on Aging.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gail, and her brother, The Rev. Peter J. Vandercook.
She leaves behind her loving family: two sons, David and Peter Knight, Glastonbury, two daughters, Catherine Ostermueller (Gary) Metuchen, NJ, and Jennifer Hintz (Paul), Portland, a stepson, Steven Bishop, Ogden, UT, five grandchildren, Dan Ostermueller (Fallon), Jeff Ostermueller (Angela), Ben Hintz (Emily), Alaina Hintz, and Zachary Hintz (Tayler). Her greatest thrill was getting to know her three beloved great-granddaughters, Remi and Colette Ostermueller and Nora Hintz.
