Obituary of Margery Hatfield DeMay
Margery "Marge" DeMay, née Hatfield, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2026, at the age of 93 in Cromwell, Connecticut.
Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on July 27, 1932, Marge was raised in South Burlington, Vermont, where she developed the quiet determination, kindness, and sense of community that would define her life. She graduated from South Burlington High School before attending Becker Junior College, where she earned a degree in Medical Secretarial Science. She began her career as a medical secretary before marrying and devoting herself to raising her family.
As the wife of a corporate executive whose career required frequent relocations, Marge embraced each move with grace, creating a warm, stable, and loving home wherever life took them. Her greatest joy was always her three children, and she made every house feel like home.
When her youngest child entered high school, Marge returned to the workforce as a teller at Connecticut Bank & Trust. Her intelligence, work ethic, and natural leadership quickly earned her promotions to supervisory positions and ultimately to Branch Manager, where she built a respected career while continuing to serve her community.
Community service became one of Marge's greatest passions. A longtime resident of Madison, Connecticut, she was a dedicated member of the Guilford Rotary Club, becoming its second female president. She was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow and chaired the club's annual Lobster Fest for many years, helping make it one of the organization's signature community events. After moving to Meadow Hill in Glastonbury she continued her service through Partners in Planting and taking an active role volunteering in the Meadow Hill community.
Above all else, Marge treasured her family. Known to her grandchildren as Grandma or Mema, she delighted in making birthdays and holidays memorable and especially loved summers spent with her children and grandchildren enjoying Madison's beaches, parades, and traditions. She found happiness in life's simple pleasures—gardening, bowling, Tai Chi, line dancing, brewing beer, cheering on her beloved UConn Husky basketball teams, and spending time with the many friends whose lives she quietly enriched through her warmth, loyalty, and gentle spirit.
Marge is survived by her children, Stephen DeMay and his wife Karen, and their children Rachel and Samuel; Douglas DeMay and his wife Nancy, and their children Juliana, Erin, and Lee Thomas; Jeanne DeMay Zirolli and her husband Karl; and by her sister, Nancy Paige.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Sarah ("Sadie") Hatfield; her sister, Barbara Fondry; and her brother, John Hatfield.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Pilgrim Manner and Compassus Hospice for their kindness and care over the past two years.
