Obituary of John L. McDonough, Jr.
John (Jack) McDonough of Glastonbury, CT passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026 surrounded by family. He was born in Turtle Creek, PA on August 27, 1931 to John and Rae McDonough. Jack leaves behind his beloved wife Aileen of 64 years, his daughter Kathleen (husband John Hickey, deceased) of Jamaica Plain, MA and his son Kevin of South Glastonbury, his brother Larry and wife Dolores Koslosky of Murraysville, PA and his nephew Joseph McDonough and wife Denise Lecher of Upper St. Clair, PA and their children Luke and Grace. His sister Nancy predeceased him.
After graduating from Turtle Creek High School in 1949 Jack entered the Army in November 1953. During his time in the service, he spent 18 months in Korea in an Ordnance Group that calibrated various artillery weapons. During his tour in Korea, he was promoted to Sergeant and was honorably discharged in September 1954.
After leaving the service he utilized the GI Bill of Rights to attend Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and graduated in 1958 with a B.S. in Business Administration and a major in accounting. He was a member and Secretary of Beta Alpha Phi (honorary business fraternity) during the years he attended Duquesne. Upon graduation he joined the International Accounting firm of Price Waterhouse & Co. (PW) in Pittsburgh where he became a Certified Public Accountant in 1961. Jack transferred to the Nashville office in 1962, transferred to the New York office in 1965, where he started to specialize in insurance accounting and auditing, and to the Hartford office in 1970. In 1971 he was admitted to the PW partnership of PW and was named as the U.S. firm’s lead specialist in insurance accounting. Jack provided expert witness testimony in both federal and state courts in connection with insurance company litigation. His role as the firm’s Insurance Specialist required frequent travel as he consulted with and supported many offices inside and outside the U.S. He retired from PW in 1990.
He was active professionally with the Insurance Committee American Institute of CPA’s (AICPA) for fifteen years beginning in 1966 and he served as its Chairman for three years ending in 1981. Jack was also active in the Insurance Accounting & Statistical Association (IASA) and attended its regional and annual meetings where he was a frequent speaker. He also attended and spoke at frequent meetings of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
Since Jack grew up near Pittsburgh it was only natural for him to become an avid fan of the professional teams there. His favorite team was the Pittsburgh Steelers and he and his son were fortunate to attend the 2009 and 2011 Super Bowls games in which the Steelers played. Jack also enjoyed golf and billiards, both of which he started to play at an early age. He continued to follow and play golf until the latter years of his life but had only one hole in one in 1998 at Western Gailes Golf Club in Scotland. Jack excelled at playing billiards and thoroughly enjoyed playing the game with other seniors at Glastonbury’s Riverfront Community Center. Most importantly, Jack enjoyed meeting and interacting with people. He had a friendly personality and a good sense of humor.
After his retirement Jack carried out volunteer work at church, notably running a Prison Fellowship Project (Angel Tree) for fifteen years where specific toys and clothing were bought by volunteers each Christmas for children of the incarcerated. He also was extremely active at the Country Club of Farmington (CCF) where he served on or as the head of various committees, the CCF Board and as a Vice President for two years.
A memorial service and reception will be held on Monday August 17th, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at the Congregational Church in South Glastonbury; 949 Main St. South Glastonbury, CT 06073
