Obituary of William Matthew Bland

William M. “Matt” Bland, 49 of Glastonbury CT, formerly of Marshfield, MA, died suddenly May 2, 2016 at Hartford Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents William H. and Diane L. (DuVall) Bland of Glastonbury. Matt had a passion for the outdoors. He especially loved fishing, camping, and riding his Harley. He was very intelligent and able to answer various types of trivia questions. He enjoyed staying up late with family and friends, playing board games until he won. Matt was “Born to be Wild” and a loyal Tony Stewart fan, never missing a NASCAR race. Matt was not afraid to get his hands dirty. He was a “Jack of all Trades” and very mechanically inclined. For years he was a proud co-owner of Pacific Pools, specializing in above ground pool installations. Matt also worked for several restaurants, the most memorable, The Blacksmith Tavern, where his love for cooking began. He was an extremely good cook and took pride in food presentation. Whether Matt made you laugh or made you cry, his intentions were always from the heart. His charm, smile and dry sense of humor will undoubtedly be missed by all who knew him. Matt is survived by his sons, James and John Bland, and their mother, Cheryl Spencer of Marshfield MA, his brother Gregory D. Bland of Glastonbury, niece Lauren Bland of Pawtucket RI, aunts and uncles; Marcia and James Wonnacott of Columbia Station OH, Louis and Catherine Bland of Barrington IL, Frederick and Beverly Bland of Bethesda MD, and countless friends. Calling hours will be held from 11am-1pm, followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m., to be held at the Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury on Saturday June 4 In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the William M. Bland Memorial Fund to Benefit James and John Bland. An account has been set up at Rockland Trust Company. Please mail checks to Rockland Trust Company, 31 Webster Square, Marshfield, MA 02050.
