Obituary of Donald Ross

Donald S. Ross, 77, of South Glastonbury, beloved husband for 47 years of Barbara (Burke) Ross, died peacefully Monday September 24, 2012 at home surrounded by his family after courageously battling a long illness. Don was born January 4, 1935 in Pawtucket, RI, son of the late Herbert E. and Geraldine (Stevenson) Ross and he had lived in South Glastonbury for the past 45 years. Don graduated from North High School in Worcester, MA, served four years in the US Navy and then began his career as a PGA Professional. He was an assistant golf pro at Farmington Country Club and started in 1966 at Glastonbury Hills Country Club as the Head Pro until his retirement in 1995. During the winter months, he was employed by Valley Oil of Portland, CT for many years. He is a life member of the PGA. Given his profession, he was passionate about the game of golf and was proud to have worked side-by-side with his daughters in the pro shop. He enjoyed his time spent with friends at the Glastonbury Coffee Shop and his trips traveling down south to play golf. Besides his wife he is survived by three daughters and their husbands Laurie and Don Wilson of South Glastonbury, Amy Ross of Monroe and her partner Steve McMahon, and Sarah and Ed Hoffman of Manheim, PA; five grandchildren, Jamie, Tyler, Madison, Ryan and Trevor; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Brian and Maria Burke of Grantham, NH and Sharon and Bob Shea of Glastonbury, and many wonderful nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Herbert E. Ross, Jr. and his wife Patricia. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Fresenius Medical Center in East Hartford for their kindness and compassion shown to Don during his illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 10am in St. Augustine Church, 55 Hopewell Rd., South Glastonbury. Burial will follow in St. Augustine Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury on Friday Sept. 28 from 5-8pm.
