Obituary of Donald King Wilson, Jr.

Donald King Wilson, Jr., 83, of Glastonbury, beloved husband of Jean (McCamley) Wilson, died Wednesday November 14, 2018 at Hartford Hospital. Born July 13, 1935 in Albany, NY, son of the late Donald K. and Marion (Smith) Wilson he had lived in Glastonbury since 1972. Don was a graduate of the Albany Academy and Georgetown University and had served in the US Navy. Beginning in The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company's Philadelphia branch office, through his retirement 32 years later as the company's Executive Vice President, Don Wilson's career as a corporate and community leader was characterized by a steadfast commitment to excellence. His participatory management style has served him well, particularly in the areas of leadership, strategic planning, organizational development, and marketing. Don Wilson was a consultant with American Phoenix Corporation of Connecticut, a subsidiary of The Phoenix. He was Chairman of the Board of the Spencer Turbine Company, a Director of Salient 3 Communications, Inc. and Kingsbury, Inc. He was a past Director of Mechanics Savings Bank and the Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company of Canada. He was a Partner of DKWilson Associates LLC (Green, Wilson & Associates), Management Consultants. Active in the community, Mr. Wilson has been Chair of The Connecticut Commission on Children and Youth, Junior Achievement, Hartford Action Plan on Infant Health and the 1994 United Way Campaign Chairman. He was an Honorary Director of the Hispanic Health Council and a Senior Fellow of the American Leadership Forum, a Director of Riverfront Recapture Inc. Director of the CEO Foundation, and Director of the Hartford Youth Scholars Foundation. He has been a Trustee of Saint Joseph College, a Director of The Asylum Hill Boys and Girls Club Development Association, Chairman of the Board of the Northwoods Stewardship Center of Vermont, President of the Board of Trustees of the Watkinson School and Executive Director of the Children's Educational Opportunity Foundation of Connecticut. He was a recipient of the United Way Community Service Award and the Franciscan Friars Francis Medal. An active member of St Patrick-St Anthony Church, Eucharistic minister, chair of the board on the finance committee. Besides his wife he is survived by his nine children and their spouses, Jeanne and David Farrell of So. Glastonbury, Mark and Mitzi Wilson of Glastonbury, Jeff and Paula Wilson of Glastonbury, Donald and Laurie  Wilson of So. Glastonbury, Kathleen and Mark Galley of Westport, Kristen Wilson of VT, Ann Marie Leduc of Glastonbury, Peter and Leslie Wilson of Auburn, MA Elizabeth and Matthew Cameron of Marlborough and 19 grandchildren, Sean, Shannon, Derek, Casey. Lyssa, Ashley, Cory, Hannah, Jamie, Tyler, Brewster, Madison, Christopher, Ryan, Emily, Grace, Colin, Lainey and Jackson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday Nov. 20 at 10am in St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church, 285 Church St., Hartford. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours.
