Obituary of Margaret Ann "Peggy" Smith
Dr. Margaret Ann (Peggy) Smith, DMD, 73, of Glastonbury, CT, passed away on August 5, 2019 at home. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Peggy was the daughter of Robert and Lorna Schow. She graduated from the University of Michigan, and received her Doctor of Dental Medicine from the University of Connecticut.
Peggy was a dentist with a private practice in Glastonbury for two decades. She then was diagnosed with cancer (multiple myeloma) which she lived with for nearly 20 years. During that time, she was Chief Dental Officer for Generations Family Health Center in Willimantic, CT for 11 years. She also served on the Board of Directors of the New England Rural Health RoundTable, Tunxis Community College Dental Hygiene program and the Connecticut Oral Health Initiative.
Peggy leaves her husband of 48 years, Edward, their daughter Kristina (Nina) Smith and husband Chris Melomo of Santa Fe, NM, their son Edward Smith II and wife Sarah McGray-Smith of Seattle, WA, and their son Matthew Smith and wife Deborah Powers and granddaughter Madeleine Smith of Caldwell, ID. Peggy also leaves her sister, Kathryn Pipis of Longmont, CO, brother, Robert Schow of San Francisco, CA, sister, Marian Payne of Wheaton, IL, and brother Thomas Schow of Chattanooga, TN and their families.
Peggy enjoyed her family and her patients. She was an avid knitter, loved classical music, enjoyed reading and her book groups, and remembered happy decades sailing with her family on their boat “Jelly Beans.”
This world is a little poorer place without Peggy.
A funeral service in celebration of Peggy’s life will be held at 10am on Saturday, August 24 at First Church of Christ Congregational, 2183 Main Street, Glastonbury. Burial will follow in Old Church Cemetery, Glastonbury. There are no calling hours.
