Born in Hartford, he was the son of Elizabeth (Hoar) Doherty and the late Philip J. Doherty. Ryan was a 2005 graduate of St. Bernard High School and attended Franklin Pierce University for several years. He was a former Granby and Old Lyme resident, moving to Florida 10 years ago.
