Obituary of George D. Uhl

George D. Uhl, husband and best friend of 58 years to Carole A. Uhl, passed away on February 17, 2020. George, the son of Edward J. and Marie E. (Schultz) Uhl, was born on June 23, 1934 in Woodside, NY. George was so proud of his five children and their families: Diana Kelley and her husband Robert of Glastonbury, Deborah Bohling and her husband J. Scott of Greenwich, Dawn Lunsford and her husband Chris of Glastonbury, George Uhl and his wife Geeah of Allen, TX and Dana Sambogna and her husband John of West Yarmouth, MA. Within this large and loving family are his 13 grandchildren: Bobby Kelley and his wife Amy, Steven Kelley and his wife Courtney, Michael Kelley and his wife Ashley; Zachary Bohling, Maxwell Bohling, Erik Bohling, Rachael Bohling; Amanda Lunsford, Christopher Lunsford, Kelly Lunsford; Erin Uhl, Sydney Uhl , Shane Uhl; and 2 great grandchildren, Haley Kelley and Brynn Diakostavrianos. George is survived by two sisters, Eleanor Blank of Shirley, NY and Barbara and her husband Lou DiBello of New Fairfield, CT and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Edward Uhl, sister-in-law Ann Uhl, brother-in-law George Blank and a nephew. George moved to Flushing, NY in 1944. He graduated from Flushing High School in 1952 and Long Island Agricultural and Technical School in 1954. He was a veteran of the US Air Force serving from 1954 to 1958 and was stationed in Limestone, ME and Plattsburgh, NY at SAC bases. He graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. He played basketball and baseball while at UCONN and was co-captain of the basketball team in his junior year. He also played in the Cape Cod Baseball League in the summer of 1961. He received the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accounting award as the highest ranking member of the accounting graduating class of 1962. He was employed by Price Waterhouse in 1962 and joined the Hartford Electric Light Company in 1964. In 1966 he transferred to the Northeast Utilities Service Company upon the affiliation of HELCO, CL&P and WMECO. He held various financial positions – Assistant Controller in 1972, Controller in 1981 and in 1984 was appointed Vice President & Controller for Northeast Utilities and its subsidiary companies. He was also Vice President and Controller of the Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company. He was Treasurer of the Northeast Power Coordinating Council and served on various committees of the Edison Electric Institute. During this time he assisted in the development of a Public Utility Accounting Course with Virginia Commonwealth University and taught several courses. He was chairman of the Chief Accounting Officers Committee of the EEI and testified before The Financial Accounting Standards Board on various accounting matters especially as they pertained to Nuclear Generating investments. He retired in 1992 after 28 years in the utility industry. He served as Treasurer of Literacy Volunteers of America (Hartford Chapter), of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Storrs, CT and the Village of Minnechaug Homeowners Association. George was an avid golfer and was a member of the Manchester Country Club. During the 1970’s and 1980’s he and his family spent summer vacations on Cape Cod in the town of Chatham. He especially enjoyed New England fall foliage trips with his family on Columbus Day weekends. A memorial service will be held in the spring.
