I had come to know Betty through working with the Great Meadows Conservation Trust over the last 7 or so years. Betty was a powerhouse. As former president of the GMCT, I relied on Betty in several key areas including the critical role serving as chairwoman of our land acquisition committee. We also worked closely on a series of fun events for the 50th anniversary of the GMCT. I respected Betty for her expertise, tenacity, and composure and I also appreciated how generous she was with her time and ideas. Betty always was ready with ideas- and not just any ideas, good ideas! Betty was also very warm and we would never leave a phone call without first chatting about how my family was doing. It will be hard to imagine the GMCT events without Betty and her "funky" glasses sitting near the front row- I will greatly miss her contributions both during our meetings and the social hour that follows adjournment. Betty was a fierce advocate for her community and environmental issues in Connecticut. While she will be dearly missed, her impact will be felt far into the future.

Betty and I were "new " friends, meeting in the past few years through Glastonbury Partners in Planting and hearings for the town Plan of Conservation and Development. We found we had many shared experiences and loves, including Girl Scouting. I hope she is happily wandering along mountain paths, singing exhuberantly! I already miss her. My condolences to her family and many friends..

Oh dear Betty.....how you enriched my life! I met Betty through the Great Meadows Conservation Trust about 12 or so years ago when we both served on the Board of Directors for our respective towns. We worked closely for the past 10 years on the RockyHill Landfill project as members of the Review Team (I’m sure she must have mentioned that). Betty’s knowledge and contributions to the Review Team made a huge impact, and sitting next to her during those meetings gave me a great sense of her wisdom, her quick wit, and her wonderful sense of sarcasm. She was not only a mentor, but her undying love for land conservation and preservation of the environment was contagious.
Once during a walkover of a tract of farmland the Trust was acquiring, Betty and I stood in the middle of the expanse of plowed land along the Connecticut River in South Glastonbury, where she exuberantly described the joy of having such a treasure right in our own backyards. There we were, the two of standing alone in the middle of acres and acres of ankle deep dirt, and she stared towards the River and with her arms raised high, shouted “Isn’t this AMAZING? Don’t you feel as though we’re worlds away from civilization?”. She couldn’t contain herself. She absolutely loved it, and I couldn’t help but absolutely love it too.
To Betty’s family, I am so saddened for your loss. I’m sure you know that Betty didn’t leave without making her word heard, and she certainly left a legacy of land preservation to her local Connecticut communities. I never met anyone like Betty. And I doubt I ever will again.

Betty was an incredible asset to Glastonbury/South Glastonbury working with Land Heritage, Historical Society & GPIP
( Glastonbury Partners in Planting). She never hesitated to be engaged for the betterment of her community. She will be missed but never forgotten for her beauty, friendliness, intelligence & contributions.

Please know of my prayers and heartfelt sadness upon hearing of Betty's death. I had only met her in person a couple of times through her sister, Susie, but Susie shared many stories about Betty over the years. Please accept my condolences for the family and for her many friends.

My sadness is mixed with fond memories of working with Betty at the Connecticut State Department of Education. One of my prized possessions is a vintage copy of The Last Hurrah that she gave me along with a wonderful personal dedication. Sorry that we lost touch over the years since but nothing but grateful for having known her. My condolences to her family.
