Obituary of Joyce Young

Joyce Hobbie Young passed away unexpectedly on January 22, 2013. The daughter of Roy and Mildred Hobbie, born on January 13, 1925 in Hartford, CT, Joyce grew up and graduated from Glastonbury High School. She attended a two-year program at Green Mountain Junior College for Women before spending the majority of her life in Glastonbury, CT. While raising six wonderful children, Joyce also had an illustrious career as a respected surgical technician, working 25 years in the Hartford Hospital operating room. Joyce was an avid New York Giants fan, bridge player, and member of the Glastonbury Garden Club. A daily reader of the New York Times, Joyce always followed current events. Often the object of familial joking, Joyce used a raised eyebrow and finger wag in order to emphasize her strong opinions and make a stand. She will be remembered for her big heart, compassion, and nonjudgmental manner. In addition to engaging with her youngest grandchildren, she spent much of her time reading the books stacked on her coffee table and enjoying the blooming flowers of her daughter's garden. A dedicated member of the First Church of Christ in Glastonbury, Joyce served on the Board of Deacons and the Board of Christian Education. In addition to participating in the adult bell choir, Joyce volunteered every Wednesday at church and tutored children at the Wish School in Hartford, CT. She is survived by her children: Peter Brouwer and his wife Cindy, Brian Young and his wife Sandy, Steven Brouwer and his wife Molly, Jonathan Brouwer and his wife Maria, and Melissa Clair and her husband Gordon. "Gram" will be greatly missed by her loving grandchildren: Emily, Susannah, Whitney, Perry, Thatcher, Ben, Brook, Johanna and Avery. The individuals she touched in her lifetime will dearly miss her classy style, outspoken manner, and fiery wit. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Church of Christ, Congregational at 2183 Main Street, Glastonbury, CT 06033. A memorial service will be held later in the Spring.
