Otto Koenig

Obituary of Otto G. Koenig

A loving heart stopped beating after a long battle with heart disease.  Otto G. Koenig, 81, passed away peacefully at home on March 12, 2021 with his wife of 59 years, Annelies, by his side.  Annelies spent the last month caring for him with the help of their devoted daughters, Elisabeth and Carola.

Otto was born on February 4, 1940 in Marktleuthen, Germany, the son of the late Alma and Georg König. He immigrated to Connecticut in 1961 with Annelies. They resided in Hartford and Windsor before settling in Glastonbury, CT for the last 43 years.

Otto learned cabinet making from his father and often made furniture for his family.  His house and those of his daughters are filled with the furniture that he lovingly crafted.  He worked all over New England as an installation foreman of laboratory furniture and equipment in schools, hospitals, and laboratories.

Otto had a love of travel and would return often to his native Germany. At home, he spent much of his time at their cottage on Lake Williams. Opa loved when his 5 grandchildren would stay there for the summer.  Days would be filled with swimming, fishing, sailing, and playing cards.  He was a passionate zither player, entertaining many with his skills.

Otto will be remembered for his big smile and laugh, kind heart, and generosity towards others.  He loved to ski, golf, play soccer, go deep sea fishing, and take nature walks with his friends and family.  Otto also enjoyed painting and photography.  He was an all-around handyman extraordinaire.

Otto is survived by his wife, Annelies; his daughter Elisabeth and her husband Kyle MacAfee and their children Katarina, Ian, and Cameron MacAfee;  his daughter Carola and her husband Michael Frantzen and their children Stephen Frantzen and his girlfriend Gabriela Brown and Amanda Frantzen and her fiancé Kyle Merry.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 46 Woodland Street, Hartford CT 06105.
