Obituary of Jean A. Greene

Jean A. (vonAllmen) Greene, 90, of Glastonbury passed away on Monday, April 3, 2023 at home surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of Joseph F. Greene, Jr.

Born in West Haven, Jean was the daughter of the late Carl and Frances (Shepard) vonAllmen. She attended schools in West Haven, CT, the University of Connecticut where she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy and later pursued another degree at St. Joseph University obtaining a degree in education.

While attending the University of Connecticut she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. While there she met her husband on a blind date to go to a UConn basketball game. They were married after her graduation and were married for 68 years.

Jean initially worked at the United Technologies Research Labs Wind Tunnel, then went to work in a drug store as a pharmacist and ended up working for the Glastonbury School System as a Librarian at the Academy School which was her passion in work.

Jean was a member of First Church of Christ Congregational for over 66 years and served on many committees including serving as the Church Historian for 50 years.

Jean was very active in organizational activities in and around town. During the Bi-Centennial she was president of the Historical Society and under her leadership had the Wells Chapman Tavern in the center of town moved from across the street to its present location and restored. She personally signed the mortgage to pay for the costs. The cemetery tours of the Green Cemetery now used by the Historical Society to teach school children were initially developed by Jean. She was a member of the Historic District Commission that developed the initial district in town. She visited most of the potential members in the district to obtain their input for the original area. She was a member of the DAR and served as Regent and a Registrar. Other organizations she belonged to and supported were the Eastern Star, the Evergreen Garden Club, the Connecticut Genealogy Society and The Founders of Hartford.

In addition to her organizational activities she had many hobbies. She did rug hooking, flower arranging and pressed glass collecting for which she received many awards.

In addition to her husband, Jean is survived by her daughter Kathryn A. (Greene) Gellman and her husband Steve of Glastonbury.
