Celebration of Life
Obituary of John A. Vollinger
John Vollinger was in peace and contentment when he died, June 21, 2023. “A bright, beautiful shining light in this world who will be missed by everyone who came into contact with him.”
Born Oct. 20, 1920, in Hadley, Massachusetts,, his family moved to East Hartford where they endured the hardships of the depression and where he met his lifelong love, Rosemarie (Sukosky), who predeceased John in 2020. During World War II he served with the Marine Corps for three years in the South Pacific. He returned and married Rosemarie. They raised three children in East Hartford, were founding members of Faith Lutheran Church, and John was the scoutmaster of Boy Scout troop 60, East Hartford. They moved on to build a home in West Simsbury, became snowbirds in Sun City, Fl., later returned to reside in Glastonbury. There they lived their final days together with 75 years of marriage. Following the war, John began as a lead carpenter with Bartlett, Brainard, Hartford, went on to be plant manager with Royal Typewriter and Hartford. He completed his career as senior estimator and buyer with Fred Brunoli and Sons, in Avon. John was a creative person in useful and playful works; creating inventions, art carvings, poetry and his “World War II memoirs of John Vollinger”. He loved sharing a good story, song or recitation of verse from Kipling to Garrison Keillor - entertaining family and good friends, including those in final years at McAuley in West Hartford. John’s long, full and productive life closes a final chapter on what Tom Brokaw has referred to, as “The greatest generation”.
He leaves his children, Gary Vollinger (Pamela) , Mark Vollinger, and Susan Simmons (Richard), six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews, all of whom Rosemarie and John took great delight in.
A celebration of John and Rosemarie’s life will be held at The McAuley, building A, 275 Steele Rd., West Hartford on Saturday July 8, 2023 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family would like you to plant a tree in John’s memory or make a donation to CPTV, 1049 Asylum Avenue in Hartford, Connecticut. 06105.
