All week long, Mom looked forward to the weekend. The weekend was "time to dance", and her favorite place was "The Bronx" in Marlboro. It was one of Dad's favorite places as well, and he would talk to Orchie Menard who was an old time Band Leader. They always had a great time.

Dad had a 1938 Packard Convertible that he was always working on. Mom had a better idea. She would wait for Dad to go to work and then jump in the Packard with Frannie Oday. Down the street she would go, blasting the Four Trumpet Spartan horn as she went ... Ta-Da-Ta-Do, Ta-Da-Ta-Do. When she got back, she would laugh for hours and talk about the good time she had.

Janet enjoyed her grandchildren and they loved to visit and occasionally stay overnight. She let them watch TV in bed and would always buy chocolate donuts for them to enjoy for breakfast. She would have creative games and activities for them to do. She had a special gift of finding the most unusual things for the kids. She kept several jars of goodies in the kitchen for them above her washing machine. It was like going to a candy shop.

Janet loved to bake. In her younger days she would bake several pies for the weekend. She was known for her apple and lemon meringue pies. Although some would argue for blueberry or strawberry/rhubarb. It was not uncommon to have 2 or 3 pies going on the weekend.

Mom loved to have cookouts at the house in Worcester MA. We would sit out in the back yard for hours talking and laughing. She would always prepare a big spread. I especially remember her potato salad it was extremely good. She was very proud of Bob's beautiful garden and said she was the envy of all the ladies in the neighborhood.

In the nursing home one of Mom's favorite things to say was Ho, Ho, Ho. She would put her entire energy into it. She would lean forward in her chair and wave to get your attention. It would bring a smile to everyone she encountered. I have never met a woman that was more positive. She appreciated everything and never expected anything from anyone. When she was tired or hungry she would always say "you must be so tired or you must be so hungry" because she never wanted to be rude and put someone out.

Whenever we went to visit she would pick a special new place for us to try. She loved to order her one Martini for the evening and she sipped it through a straw. She would always give her olives to Robert who was more than happy to eat them. She would order her meal and divide it in half. Eat one half and take the other half home. She was always calorie conscience. She was known for saying she stopped having dessert years ago. Janet was very social and loved to be around people.

Mom's fondest memories of her younger years was dancing to the big bands on the pier at Old Orchard Beach. Her love for dancing continued throughout life and regularly went dancing with Bob on Saturday nights with friends all over central MA.

We have heard of her excitement shopping for "the bargain" but the real passion was being up to date with fashions and always being in style. Her favorite job was working for clothing store R. H. Whites in Worcester where she saw the latest fashions and helped people put together "the look". She was on top of fashions and what was in style well past her workings years and always took notice of stylish outfits that she saw.

Mom lived for a short period of time in Manchester NH and had few friends in the early days as they arrived in the summer after school had finished. Even though she missed the opportunity to make friends at school, her days were filled with all kinds of characters through the magic of books. She read all day long and burned through book after book all summer.

Mom often went shopping with her best friend Fran and they would drag their children along for the journey. Mom and Fran would have wonderful afternoons out shopping a variety of stores. It was all about the hunt and the potential found bargain more than it was about actually buying anything. Mom loved the conquest of finding that special bargain. Many of the best bargains would be regaled for days at morning coffee.

Mom would always cook meals to the preference of her guests. My family would normally get baked ham, corn, and potatoes with some treat such as apple turnovers. Marty would often get a helping of meatloaf. Mom always finished off with special treats that were favorites of her grandchildren and was always rewarded with their excitement and thrill at such treats.

Every year near Christmas time, Mom would make her burnt butter frosted cookies for Christmas and I loved them so much that they ended up being called with my namesake. Mom would strategically store these cookies in a large covered pan directly below the cook-top - where I would park myself to enjoy a feast on a daily basis. There were two reasons that this placement was strategic 1. I could easily gain access to these culinary delights 2. Their placement by the cook-top ensured that they would not be eaten near meal time as the cook-top needed access for the next meal to be served.
