Obituary of Daniel James Seery

Daniel J. Seery of Glastonbury, 90, passed away on January 12, 2024 after a years-long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He is predeceased by his wife, Winifred (nee Sullivan), after a fifty-year marriage of enduring love, romance, humor, and music. Born on December 17, 1933, Dan was the son of Daniel and Agnes Seery, formerly of Ireland, and brother to Sheila van Lede, Maureen Hanson, Kay Thiel, Brian Seery, and Ronnie Collins.

He grew up in Great Neck, New York. He earned B.S. and M.S. degrees from St. John’s University before earning a Ph.D. in chemistry at Penn State under Dr. Howard Palmer. After a post-doc in Minneapolis, MN, he spent his entire, highly successful, career at United Technologies Research Center in East Hartford where he rose to become head of combustion science. Both his professional and personal life were characterized by diligent service.  A long-time member of the Combustion Science Institute, he served as its president.  Passionate about his work, he was more passionate about family. As a life long Yankees fan he coached little-league baseball and played on slow pitch softball teams.  He served on the parish council of St Thomas Aquinas Catholic church in Storrs. He was an avid runner, who ran the Manchester Road Race for more than thirty consecutive years and also ran the New York Marathon. He ran daily with the Bozos. He traveled the world both for work and, with Winnie, for pleasure. He preferred the pleasure travel.

Dan was widely and deeply loved by family, colleagues, and friends.  He leaves his children, Daniel Seery of Manchester, Thomas Seery and his wife, Michelle, of Willington, and Eileen Keegan and her husband, Scott, of Manchester; his grandchildren, Valerie Seery, Jonathan Seery and his wife, Erica, Ryan Seery, Paige Cavanna and her husband, Shane, and Dillon Keegan; and his great-grandchildren, Layla and Jayella.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 10:00 a.m., at Ss. Isidore and Maria Parish in St. Paul Church, 2577 Main St., Glastonbury, with burial to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.   Family and friends may call at Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury, on Friday, January 19, 2024 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Dan was a faithful contributor to Doctors Without Borders. To honor his memory, please consider a contribution to that charity or to The Alzheimer’s Association in lieu of flowers.
