Obituary of Eva M. Berch

Eva Petersen Berch, 77, of Glastonbury, CT, died July 18, 2024 at Hartford Hospital after a short, brave battle with cancer. Eva was born in Linz, Austria, daughter of the late Dept of the Army Civilian (DAC) Edmond and Annie Petersen. As an Army Brat, Eva attended various schools in Linz, Austria, Vicenza, Italy, and Verdun, France. Schooling was put to good use as she became fluent in German, Italian, English, and French.

She met and married her husband, Michael Berch, in France, then moved to the United States where they settled in Glastonbury. There, Eva worked for The Hartford Insurance Group, Pequot Spring Water Company, One Stop Spirit Shop, and volunteered as a teachers aide at Eastbury School.

She and Michael made good use of her language skills as they vacationed in Europe. After retirement, they traveled throughout the United States, making a point to visit every National Park west of the Mississippi. Their favorite was The Grand Canyon where they stayed at the Bucky O'Neil cabin. They traveled to the Phantom Ranch four times by mule and completed a Colorado River white water raft trip.

Eva will be lovingly remembered and survived by her husband of 57 years and her sister, Susan Petersen, of Hockenheim, Germany. Eva was predeceased by her sister Margaret Poulite and sons Eric and Robert. She is survived by her grandchildren Meghan and Gillian Cameron of New Hampshire, and Shane Berch of Indiana. Eva will also be fondly remembered by her sister-in-law Kathy Hine of Avon, her niece Katy Hine of New York City, nephew Timothy Hine of Wilton, CT. and Laura Cameron of Springvale, ME and Beth King, of Indianapolis, IN.

She will also be deeply missed by Beverly Wengzn of East Hartford, Eva's decades old partner of crossword, scrabble and jumble contests,

A lover of her four-footed critters, she has missed her many Doberman and Miniature Pinchers over the years, and will be missed by her two Chihuahuas, Zig and Avalon.

A special thanks also goes to the doctors, and Hospice nurses, Annie, Julia, and Mary, who offered medical and personal support throughout her ordeal.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Eva's memory to Our Companions Animal Rescue P.O. Box 956, Manchester, CT 06045-0956, The CT Humane Society, 701 Russell Rd. Newington, CT 06111 or American Cancer Society.
