Obituary of Ruth Murphy

Ruth (Smith) Murphy, 80, of Glastonbury, beloved wife of Thomas M. Murphy, died Thursday December 5, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital. Born September 28, 1933 in Hartford, daughter of the late Raymond and Marie (Heda) Smith, she had lived in Glastonbury for the past 56 years. Ruth was a bookkeeper at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield and Hallmark Tire in Glastonbury. She received her Associates Degree from the University of Hartford, her Bachelors from Charter Oak College and her Masters in Theology from Holy Apostle College and Seminary in Cromwell. Ruth was a former board member of Catholic Charities and the Evans House, past president of the League of the Sacred Heart, a CCD teacher and a Trustee for St. Paul Church. Besides her husband she is survived by her five children and their spouses; Michael Murphy and Julia Hagan of Portland, OR, Patricia and Bernard Weis IV of Colchester, Thomas and Mary Beth Murphy of West Hartford, Caroline and Jerry Segar of Tolland, Irene and Richard Sawka of Windsor, eight grandchildren Anne Murphy-Hagan, Clare Murphy-Hagan, Luke and Patricia Murphy, Nicholas and Alexandra Segar, Grace and Harrison Sawka and two brothers and sisters-in-law Raymond and Jill Smith of Woodstock, CT and Everett and Lynda Smith of Caswell Beach, NC. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday Dec. 10 at 10am in St. Paul Church, 2577 Main St., Glastonbury. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Glastonbury.
