Obituary of Gertrude Tyrol

Gertrude "Petey" (Petersen) Tyrol, 84, of Glastonbury, beloved wife for 56 years of the late Graham E. Tyrol, passed away on Wednesday, February 12, 2014. Born in Hartford, the daughter of the late Nicolai and Gertrude Christensen Petersen. She was a past president of the Hill and Dale Garden Club, a past member of the Garden Club Council, The Village of Child and Family Services and the Board of Directors of the Glastonbury Visiting Nurse Association for many years. After graduating from The Hartford Hospital School of Nursing, Petey worked for the Glastonbury VNA where she was the third nurse ever hired. In addition to volunteering for various health clinics, she worked as an office nurse for Dr. John Price for over 25 years, always feeling the staff and patients were like family to her. She leaves behind her dearest treasures, her children. Brian and his wife, Patty, of Glastonbury; Scott and his wife, Laura, of Glastonbury; and her daughter and best friend, Pam, of Portland. She also leaves her beloved grandchildren, Robert and Richard Tyrol; Jamie Tyrol Jabeck and her wife, Dana; Jeff Tyrol and his wife Erin; Glenn Taylor and his fiancé, Melissa; Stacie Savage and her husband, Dan; Johnathan Roath and his fiancé Dori; and Brook Tyrol Roath. She also leaves her sister, Jeanette St. Peter of Avon; her brother, Donald Petersen of Unionville; and a special niece, Patricia Mathison of Hillsborough, NH. She was predeceased by a brother, Harry Petersen and a sister, Lillian Sperry. Petey also leaves behind special extended family members, Stephen "Fitz", Rosa and Jessica. Petey was an avid reader, loved all types of needlework and enjoyed the beach home and Florida with her family. Petey and Graham enjoyed years full of travel and happy times together. She was a loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother and a good friend. Calling hours will be Monday, February 17, from 4-7 p.m. at the Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 18, at 11:00 a.m. at The Portland Congregational Church, 554 Main Street, Portland. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to The Glastonbury Lions Club, P.O. Box 752, Glastonbury, CT 06033 to be used for Macular Degeneration Research.
