Obituary of Myles Covey

Myles E. Covey, 94, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at home. He was born in North Leverett, MA on September 26, 1919 to the late David and Helen (Stacy) Covey. He grew up in Montague, MA and attended Montague High School leaving at the age of 17 during the Great Depression to take care of his family after his father died. He proudly served in the 2nd Armored Division (Hell on Wheels) from 1941 to 1945. He earned the Bronze Star for his bravery as a medic and fought in North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, Belgium and the Battle of the Bulge. He enjoyed a lifelong connection with WWII veterans and attended many reunions with the 2nd Armored Division where he served on the Board of Governors. After the war, Myles moved to CT and worked as a machinist. He learned the trade and then started his own company in 1957 in Glastonbury. C&W Manufacturing Company celebrated 56 years in business this past year. In 1950 he married the love of his life, Norma Scott. They had 56 happy years together, living in Glastonbury for over 40 years. Myles volunteered for many town organizations. He was active at the YMCA, was an EMT for the Glastonbury Ambulance, and was past President of the Glastonbury Rotary Club. Myles loved to travel and in 1975 Myles and Norma opened the Myles Travel Agency in Glastonbury. They traveled around the world together. He organized and escorted many groups on tours of the WWII battle fields in Europe commemorating the anniversaries of D Day. He loved to fish and took groups to Alaska, Northwest Territories and the Amazon. Myles was an active member of The Congregational Church in South Glastonbury where he served as a deacon and was active on several committees. He lived his faith every day. He was an avid Boston Red Sox and UConn Huskies fan. He loved spending time with family and friends more than anything. He was a devoted father and adoring grandfather. He is survived by his two loving daughters and their families: Chrisann Covey and her wife, Eva of Glastonbury and their children Lorna, Anita, Tyler, Mina and Jonathan; and Cynthia Miller and her husband Scott of South Windsor and their children, Jim and Katie. He also leaves his brothers David Covey of Millers Falls, MA and Gerald Covey of Marshfield, MA as well as many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. He leaves many close friends who were like family to him. He was predeceased by his wife Norma and his brothers Pat Covey, Philip Covey, Herman Covey and his sisters Leona Robert, Myrtle Golden, and Ina Kapitan. A funeral service will be held Friday, May 16 at 10:00 am in The Congregational Church in South Glastonbury at the corner of Main and High Street, South Glastonbury. Burial with military honors will follow at Green Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday, May 15 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury.
