Obituary of Norman Johnson

Norman L. Johnson, 87, of Avon, died Tuesday, December 13, 2011. Born March 5, 1924 in Hartford, son of the late Claus and Hildur (Sandstrom) Johnson, he had lived in Avon since 1962. He was the loving husband of the late Flora (Aitken) Johnson for 51 years. Mr. Johnson graduated from William Hall High School in 1942 and attended Hillyer College and the Hartford State Technical College. He worked for Veeder-Root Co. for 33 years as an engineer, retiring in 1989. Prior to that he worked for Royal Typewriter and Underwood Typewriter. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving in France and Germany with the artillery of the 63rd Infantry Division from 1943 to 1946, and was a member of the 63rd Infantry Division Association and the Avon Seniors. He enjoyed stamp collecting, travel, gardening and bringing his attention to detail to a variety of home improvement projects. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law; Richard and Beth Johnson of Glastonbury, and Jeffrey and Jennifer Johnson of Glastonbury, a daughter and son-in-law Barbara and David Joy of South Windsor, and his grandchildren Connor Johnson, Megan, Karen and Lauren Joy. Friends may call at the Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury on Sunday Dec. 18 from 2-4pm. Funeral and burial will be private.
