Obituary of John Apolczer

John Apolczer ("Papa," "Jancsibacsi"), 90, of East Hartford, husband of the late Marjorie (Campbell) Apolczer, died quietly at his home on Friday February 20, 2015. Born March 31, 1924 in Mor, Hungary, the son of Maria and Peter Apolczer; John came to America in 1956 after narrowly escaping from Hungary following the Soviet suppression of the Hungarian Uprising. He settled in East Hartford and was an ironworker for over 40 years. John was a longtime member of the Elks in East Hartford and then in Manchester. He was an avid gardener, loved to play pool and chopped his own firewood right up until last fall. He was famous for his homemade Hungarian kielbasa, which he made100 pounds at a time and hung in his own smokehouse. John enjoyed hosting parties, including a weekly Sunday gathering with his many Hungarian friends. Besides his wife Margie, he was predeceased by his mother Maria ("Nagymama") who immigrated to America in 1970 and lived with John and his family until her passing in 1978. John is survived by his son John Peter Apolczer and his wife Deborah of Vernon, his daughter Maria Eliason and her husband Robert of Glastonbury, 3 grandsons, Richard Madden of San Diego, Ryan Madden and Daniel Madden both of East Hartford, a sister-in-law Hazel Winn of Sunapee, NH and several nieces and nephews.
