Obituary of Theodore Johanson

Theodore A. Johanson, 77, of Glastonbury, CT, husband to Nancy (Follansbee) Johanson, died Monday (May 16, 2011) after a brief illness. In his final hours, he was surrounded by the comfort and love of his family. Ted was born on November 5, 1933 in Flushing Queens, NY, the son of Swedish Immigrants the late Elvira and Theodore Johanson. In addition to his wife of 50 years, Nancy, he is survived by their sons: Theodore and his wife Leslie of Mariaville, Maine; Charles of Long Beach, CA; Christopher and his wife Melissa of Vernon, CT; and Eric of New York, NY; and grandchildren Zachary, Christopher, Chelsea, Katie, Madison and Daniel as well as his sister Ingrid Roylance of Sarasota, FL, and many nieces and nephews. After his service in the US Army, Ted graduated from New England College (BS in Civil Engineering, 1960) and worked for over 35 years at what he loved: designing roads, bridges and tunnels and continued working even into retirement through his consulting firm TJ Engineering. He was nominated for the prestigious ASCE Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award for his work on I-91 and if you drive the roads of New England, you have likely driven on roads designed by Ted. A dedicated family man, ardent Yankee fan and proud of his Swedish heritage, he loved the sea and spent many hours fishing with his sons and grandsons as well as cruising the Connecticut River aboard the "Gammal Flicka".  In a life filled with many accomplishments, he was most proud of the successes of his four sons and, above all else, his love for his wife Nancy.

Friends and family are invited to a viewing on Sunday May 22nd at 3pm immediately followed by a funeral service at 4pm at Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury,CT. A private internment will take place in Sandown, NH on Tuesday.
