This is the first I am hearing of this and I am saddened and shocked. Doug and I started with Pratt & Whitney in 1977 and grew to be good friends. I even stayed with him for a little while at Tudor Village while my apartment became available. Doug used to called me Jonesy. Although I have not seen Doug since 1979, I never forgot our friendship. My condolences to his family.

Dear Doug's family, I am shocked and saddened to see that my old neighborhood friend has passed. I ironically saw his mom's obituary in the Sun Chronicle this past Sunday My mom and dad , Bill and Mary Bates, were good friends of Irene and Doc, and I knew he had moved to Ct, I had last visited with my dad and daughter when they still lived on Anawan Rd., This is the only way I knew Doug had passed. He was always a wonderful person and find comfort in knowing he will forever be with you and is at peace. He will live on in his children and will be missed by all of you and he was so young but one day you will all be reunited. Fondly , Tracee Bates Chretien

A synopsis of many phone calls to Doug - Doug - "Douglas Hobbs" Self - Hey Doug, John Payne. Doug - "John, Buddy, what can we do for you?" Said with a rising pitch indicating great enthusiasm for the call) Self - I need you to help us with . . . Doug - "We will do whatever you want, we can come to you, we can visit customers with you, train your folks, whatever you want." (said with great sincerity) In over 20 years of contacts with Doug, he was ALWAYS enthusiastic, helpful and upbeat. His never ending generosity and consistent sincerity were noticeable enough to warrant special notice. It is a theme that you will hear over and over, from all who worked with him. I worked with thousands of people while with Otis, but Doug was special, he brought us to his home, to meet his family, of whom he was extremely proud. He loved his life, he could not have done otherwise. To me, he was in a very small, elite group that I call - "The Good Guys". Those individuals who do not let life dictate terms, those who decide they will be and do good things, will lift up those they touch, without expecting or asking anything in return. I am sure I disappointed Doug at times, because I was not able to see past all of the obstacles ahead, but if I did, he never let me know.

I was shocked to learn of the passing of one of my dearest friends, Doug Hobbs. We grew up together in North Attleboro, MA. Played alot of basketball and golf. Worked at Heather Hill GC and spent a lot of time during teen age years. He was ALWAYS in a great mood, a smile and laugh that radiated a room and someone who was raised the proper way. Very polite and courteous to elders,a great conversationalist a truly well rounded individual. He will be greatly missed and was loved by all of his boyhood friends and I am sure that kinship continued into his adult life in Connecticut. RIP my friend

I was totally shocked to hear of Doug's passing....we were quite friendly while Doug worked at Pratt & Whitney and had many great adventures together (with our friend Bruno Frigo) especially during our summer vacations on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard as well as in the various athletic activities we participated. I remember Doug as one or the nicest guys I ever knew, very personable, smart, hard working, and successful in business as I am certain he was with his family. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Doug's loved ones and my prayers are with him in his newest adventure in his continuing life.....Joel Esten

My thoughts are with all of you through this very sad time. Living in Vancouver did not affort me the opportunity to meet any of you, but each time Doug visited the Otis Vancouver Otis office he spoke of you all with such love.
I was always in such awe of him...his generous spirit, his positive attitued especially through the most difficult time of his life, his ability to motivate and teach are just a few of the things he will be remembered for. He was an incredible individual that will be missed tremendously, he has forever touched my heart.

We have lost a great colleague however Doug's short time with us made a huge and lasting impact. Doug was a humble man who had much to be proud of not only in his professional life but in the quality of person he was. Although my position in the company was significantly junior to his he was always gracious and helpful. I learned a lot from him. I will miss his cheery and positive voice on the phone. I'd like to offer my deepest sympathy to Doug's family. I'd also like to let you know that Doug touched the lives of an unbelievable number of people in the Otis family. His diligence and comittment to quality was impressive, but his most outstanding attribute was his ability to maintain the human factor in a business environment. An encounter with Doug, whether over the phone, or in person, wasn't a transaction, it was a warm, humorous, passionate, and sincere human interaction, even if it was centered around elevator geek talk. He was one of the people that make Otis a better place to work, and he will be missed by all of us.
