Obituary of Richard A. Whitehouse
Richard “Dick” Whitehouse, husband of the late Mary Joanne Whitehouse, died on December 11, 2015 at his home in Glastonbury, in the company of his family. Born in 1937 in Broad Brook, Connecticut, son of the late Herbert and Catherine (Maloney) Whitehouse, Dick had lived in Glastonbury since 1965. He graduated from Ellsworth Memorial High School in 1955 and North Carolina State University in 1963 with a degree in electrical engineering. Dick joined the United States Marine Corps in 1957, attaining the rank of Captain and serving in Vietnam, flying in an F4-B. After leaving the Marine Corps, he worked at the Southern New England Telephone Company until his retirement. His passions included his family, hiking, camping, and working to protect and share the woodlands, trails, and parks of Connecticut. He volunteered for the Appalachian Mountain Club, the Manchester Land Conservation Trust, and as caretaker of the Case Mountain Recreational Area. He helped build and maintain many of the hiking trails in Glastonbury and Manchester and introduced the outdoors and conservation to youth. From 1999 to 2007, he served as President of the Connecticut Forest & Park Association and served on its board of directors until his passing. Dick leaves his children and their spouses, James Whitehouse and Paige Westerfield of Chaplin, Connecticut; David and Susan Whitehouse of Hebron, Connecticut; Tim Whitehouse and Joan Olmstead of Poolesville, Maryland; Maureen Teubert of Dodgeville, Wisconsin; and Mark and Mimi Whitehouse of Arlington, Virginia; 11 grandchildren; and close life-long friends, Jim and Dorthy Hardin of Raleigh, North Carolina. He was predeceased by his sisters, Evelyn Leonard and Agnes Trombley, and by his brothers, James Whitehouse, Herbert “Clint” Whitehouse, and John Whitehouse. Calling hours will be Saturday, December 19 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave.,Glastonbury. A remembrance will follow from 4-7 p.m. at Cheney Hall in Manchester.
