I had the privilege of being the Maid of Honor in Donna and Mike Rooney’s wedding at Tufts University Chapel in 1971. As Donna’s former sister-in-law, I knew Mike and Donna as a couple from the time they first began dating, through the 45 years of their marriage, the births of their children, and now the sadness of Mike’s passing with his wife at his side, holding his hand in hers. May that love honor his memory, and may you all cherish the time you had together. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
With deepest sympathy and love,
Ellen (Auntie Awa)

To the Rooney family:
I offer condolences and prayers for "Mike." I knew him well when we worked at The Travelers. He umpired many a game in which I played for the old "Budweisers." He called me out a couple times at various bases. Now I know he is safe--safe in the arms of the "Chief Umpire."
RIP, Mike

Mike was a wonderful volunteer at the Riverfront Community Center Ambassador desk and served at senior luncheons. He was also a key member of the Stormin Seniors singing group. It was heartwarming to see the delight in his eyes as he performed with the group for multiple audiences. He was clearly in his element and a natural performer. His kind nature and generosity of spirit will be remembered fondly.

Mike was legendary at The Travelers in the 80s and beyond as head of the Men's (Employee) Club and very active in organizing and playing and officiating in softball, basketball and volleyball leagues. One softball team for years was known as "Rooney's Raiders" in homage to Mike. He cut a distinctive figure on the Travelers campus and ballfields: rumpled and harried. Mike was a good man. Rest In Peace.

My heartfelt condolences to Mike's family. I have known Mike for many years through Travelers - first seeing him around the buildings and then working closely with him on the Traveler's Blood Drive Committee, since 2004. We were co-chairs of the committee for two (non-consecutive) years and we both continued our work on the committee. Mike loved to tell the story of how he recruited me for the committee at a VIP breakfast for blood donors when I asked why we only have 4 drives each year, not 5. His answer was 'why don't you join our committee?' --- we have had 5 drives/year ever since! Mike's dedication to his work and volunteering was very impressive. And he always had a story to tell. He will be missed by so many people!

Mike, its been a pleasure working with you all these years at Travelers and especially during our time together with Travelers softball. You made the experience so much better, even in the later years as the sport dwindled. I also appreciated all your volunteer time with the blood drives, those will be BIG shoes to fill. My condolences to all your family members and it is a shame for anyone that did not get to work or meet you. See you on the other side.

I have had the privilege of knowing Mike since 1974. A good, honest hard-working friend who was a grizzly bear on the outside, but was really a teddy bear within. My closest friend who I considered like a brother. He left us way too soon, and he will be sorely missed. Big hugs to Donna, Chuck and Will.

Dear Donna and The Rooney Family:
So saddened to hear of Mike's passing. We share many fond memories of Mike's wonderful volunteer spirit; whether it was decorating the Travelers Christmas tree for the Atheneum fundraiser or trying to deliver it in the blustering Winter winds, or volunteering for the Hartford Marathon at a water stop. Mike gave a lot of himself to others and demonstrated the true altruistic spirit. Sending you many loving hugs from Arizona. Bruce and Karen

I'm so sorry for your loss. I am one of many people at Traveler's that benefited from Mike's volunteering for the Employee Club. He set up tours of the Capitol Building, the Bushnell Auditorium, the Governor's Mansion at Christmas and many interesting walks throughout the neighborhoods of Hartford. He was very thoughtful and charitable and will be missed.

I was so sorry to hear of Mike's passing. I never worked with him directly at Travelers but as an active member of TTEC and past president, we crossed paths many times at TTEC events. I looked forward to his input in helping me prepare the TTEC newsletter bi-monthly and appreciated the wit in his emails. He was so giving of his time, energy and knowledge. I know TTEC was close to Mike's heart and he was highly regarded by TTEC. He will truly be missed. My condolences to the family. May your thoughts and faith help you during this most difficult time.

My sincere condolences to Mike's family and friends.
Worked with Mike at Travelers Insurance and found him to be a knowledgeable, fun loving and good friend. He always had a smile on his face and went out of his way to help people. His many years of volunteer work are an amazing quality he possessed and for that I want to express my deep appreciation.
I lost touch with Mike after I left Travelers ranks in 1993 but always had his best interests in mind and my memories of my days with Mike will be cherished forever.
Thanks Mike for allowing me to know you!
