Alexander(Sandy) van Eyck posted a condolence

I was a classmate of Mac’s at Stepinac ‘59 and we were teammates on the tennis team. I was so sorry to read about Mac’s passing. He was a wonderful person and a very good student. As I recall, he was also voted most handsome in our class. Unfortunately, we did not keep in touch after graduation from Stepinac. Mac attended Holy Cross and I graduated from Notre Dame. God bless Mac and his family and I send my deepest condolences from Tokyo, Japan where I have lived for the past 35 years.

I was a clerk typist at Cummings & Lockwood for a few years when Mac worked there. He often worked late and I volunteered to work late for him because he was the only lawyer in that firm who treated me, a "lowly" clerk typist, as an equal. He was so generous with his knowledge. After some weeks of working late for him, he began to bring some of his law books into the typing wrong and asked me to help him research some case or another. I recall spending time reading to him from his law books while he made notes.
When we were done for the evening, he would drive me to wherever my car was parked. This, of course, was in Stamford, CT and I lived in White Plains, NY. I had quite the commute home. Since it was already dark outside, he always wanted to make sure I got to my car safely.
Years later, when I learned of his troubles, I was heartsick. He was such a fine man to me. We didn't keep in touch at all, but once the internet was available to me, I tried to follow his career. I so wanted to see him do well and move beyond the stuffiness of Cummings & Lockwood to be the lawyer I knew he wanted to be. From everything I gather, he became that lawyer--and a fine husband and father and community man. Again, I was so sorry when I read about his troubles. I've never understood those troubles, but if I were asked to pass judgment on them, I'd have to say F. Mac Buckley must have been gong through something awful enough to have caused them and he should be judged not guilty of anything but some kind of torture.
I only just ran into this post tonight and I'm so sorry to read that he's died. To everyone who loved him in his life, my sincere condolences. Whatever he may have done illegally, he was a fine, fine man and I will remember him as such. God bless all of you and know that many people beyond your family, including me, loved and respected him tremendously. He's one man, one lawyer, I will never forget for his courage, his faith, and his commitment to justice.

I first met Mac in 1979. Was just returning off a four year Service tour in Germany. Mac knew who I was already because of Bob Taylor's TAB. He had Marlon Starling as his top boxer in those days. Starling -of course- went on to fame and fortune (was "already famous" as Amateur).
Mac would work my corner for fights at State championships 1982, then we went to New England finals together (1983) and 1984 we returned to the Regionals at Holyoke where I was defending 156lb.
85 I went out-of-country and returned to CT. 1988. By the summer Mac was glued onto protégé John Scully. Knowing Scully I kept track of his Boxing successes by way of the Hartford Courant and New Britain Herald. & wound up jumping into a pro career myself with Mac near to when Scully got a start. Stayed with Mac for eight months thru four matches he matched. I'm not sure why didn't continue with him but.. he indeed "gave me a good shot," just I couldn't myself work it to a advantage. So.. from 1990 went with new team for next three years. Scully left him too and I only followed Scully's management course. "Was over" for me but... you ***you don't want to quit. Scully and Mac I don't know the facts. But Scully envisioned himself making it to the top and when he lost one match [after 14-0-0 start a calibrated fringe contender beat him by a Decision and that apparently twisted up the relationship they had].
I last SEE Mac at the wake of Johnny Duke the years ago. He may of been standing with the HVYwt protégé I'm not sure (Tony Grano).
In my book he was DEAR MAN. I was living in foster care as youth. In Hartford. Institutionalized. I thought Mac was "Governor" of CT. back then and here I was only in fourth grade. He was "always on my mind" I am not kidding. I don't know how that was.. but obviously it was because he had a reputation like the Mexican Cowboy *Zoro all-the-years.
Mac never lacked words. I have a few nice memories being beside him. It was sad news when it came that he passed away. We can rejoice that he lived to 80 at least!
And of course if Christ now has saved his soul. (He was probably better than I will ever.....So... HOPE HE MADE IT INTO THAT CERTAIN PLACE WE CALL HEAVEN).
Mac was someone you meet him you are not gonna forget him and also you are gonna remember details of your times together.
Once me and my chum Kelley from Waterbury & Bristol went out to his Farm there on Cooley Road Marlborough and Mac gave us his sweet time and toured the barn and showed the Cows and the fields.
I Remer the media [TV] mobbing him at least once too. Of which his Law Practice brought him a certain kind of attention in Hartford.
Have good Holiday days now Mac! See you again maybe. GOD is good no matter what! Thank you for the memories I have for you.

Thank you Uncle Mac and Auntie Donna and Mom and Dad for carrying on the important tradition that Grandpa and Grandma started for the holidays. I can’t remember a Christmas Eve or Easter growing up not celebrated all together. The positive impact of being surrounded by unconditional love, amongst the chaos, feeling the bond of being part of a tribe, is a gift beyond measure. I wish I could be there in person to hug my beautiful Auntie and cousins and honor your greatness, but I feel so lucky to have had shared some memories together with you at Michelle’s amazing wedding celebration. We will miss you Uncle Mac, but we’ll never forget you!

During the four years that our daughter Jill was a roommate will Michelle at Trinity College, we had the good fortune to be able to spend time with the Buckley family and to experience the warmth of the family. If you are lucky, as you go through life, you will meet a person like Mac (a true "character") and always remember him and the joy that he brought to every moment. We were so fortunate to have known Mac, the girls and Donna and we send our best wishes and ask the Lord's blessings for the family. Frank Pagliaro

Mac was instrumental in forming the Alumni Boxing Club at Holy Cross, and I was one of the participants.....three bouts, one win, one loss and one draw. Lots of clever prose was written about exploits and participants . My thoughts and prayers are with you on your loss. Bill McGurk. HC '63 from SW Florida

As a 1963 Holy Cross classmate, I vividly recall the boxing matches Mac created. They were uproarious fun. We had no contact over the years, but as is clear from his obituary, he led a jam packed life affecting hundreds of others for the better. Sincere condolences to his family and friends. -Mike Falivena, Venice, FL

Rosemary and Jim Bell send prayerful condolences to Mac’s widow and their beautiful family.
We are so sorry to hear this sad news.
Mac and Jim were classmates at Holy Cross where Mac distinguished himself as a kind & good person, a charismatic gentleman, and by essentially “inventing” the sport of boxing at HC. Mac pretty much interested/taught/then trained almost all those of our HC era who engaged in the sport during our years there, notably including his childhood/high school/HC friend & classmate the late, inimitable Peter Cox. What a duo! And what colorful joy & laughter Mac & Pete added to the history of the Class of 1963.
May God rest Mac’s kind soul and enfold his widow and entire family in His healing, consoling embrace.
Rest In Peace.
Rosemary and Jim Bell
