Obituary of Donald T. Schmitt

Donald T. Schmitt, 72, of Columbia, beloved husband of Madonna (Fogarty) Schmitt, passed away peacefully Monday February 9, 2016 at Windham Hospital. Born Sept. 24, 1943 in Rock Island, IL, son of the late Edward and Henrietta (Mortier) Schmitt. He was a graduate of Trinity College and owned Alliance Bankcard. Donald was an active member of St. Columba Church and made the vows of a Benedectine Oblate in 2014. He enjoyed woodworking and attending his grandchildren's sports and arts events. Donald also served honorably in Korea while enlisted in the U.S. Army. Besides his wife, he is survived by four children: Mathew and wife, Stephanie, of Sparks, NV; Molly (Schmitt) Grabowski and husband, Daniel, of Hebron, CT; Jared and wife, Kristine, of Orange, CT; and Benjamin of Brooklyn, NY. He has eight grandchildren: Nathan, Alyssa, Maximilian, and Spencer Schmitt; John “Jack” and Katherine Grabowski; and Nora and James Schmitt. Donald is also survived by his siblings William Schmitt, Edward Schmitt, Mary Kay (Schmitt) Frye, Theresa Schmitt, and pre-deceased by his sister Carol (Schmitt) Larson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday Feb. 12 at 11am at St. Columba Church, RT 66, Columbia. Burial will be in the spring in Columbia Center Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury on Thursday Feb. 11 from 5-8pm and on Friday morning at the church from 10 to 10:30am.
